Last night was supposed to be steak night. Lucky for you, things got a little busy around here and instead of making the pretty dinner that I had planned, I accidently invented the ultimate man meal.
This is what I had on hand: steaks in the fridge, ciabatta bread, truffle mousse (which is made of pork, turkey & chicken liver & can be purchased at Central Market for $7.99) & eggs.
So here's the game plan.
GET STARTED: Put some butter in the skillet. Cut some thin slices of steak and toss 'em in. Cook until it darkens a bit on each side, then remove the meat and set it aside for a sec. Break an egg in the skillet, and let it cook there sunny side up. Slice the Ciabatta bread roll in half and put the two slices in the skillet. It's okay that the egg is over there too, just don't let the bread get in it's way.
ASSEMBLY: Remove the bread, and spread the mousse on the bottom half. Then, arrange the slices of steak on top. Without breaking the yolk, place the egg on top. Carefully place the other slice of ciabatta.
FINISHING UP: Transfer the manwich to an oven safe dish, and drizzle with the juice from the skillet. Put the whole thing into the oven for five minutes at 350 then serve!!
With veggie kabobs.
And Watermelon Mojitos!!
This will definitely lift your spirits on a dreary winter week night!
Plus, I like skipping wine on a meal like this and serving fun cocktails instead! I got the idea from the Barefoot Contessa (Ina Garten), but her recipe was a little too complicated for a Monday evening. These were delicious, and super simple to make: Combine fresh watermelon juice (Get it at Whole Foods or somewhere similar) with crushed mint, crushed ice, a dollop of sugar and some fresh squeezed lime. Mix in rum, taste the concoction and add whatever it needs! Rim the glasses with sugar and pour! Place in freezer until you're read to serve, they'll come out icy & delicious!
For you dedicated readers who know from earlier posts that I am currently following the "clean living" plan, don't worry! I had steak & an egg with veggies, and it was yum but not nearly as exciting as the manwich. Sad!
And while I didn't get to try the manwich, I'm happy to report that it got rave reviews. Like, this-is-the-best-sandwich-I've-ever-eaten-in-my-life reviews, so I think it's a safe bet!
Enjoy!!
Enjoy!!
